Ushers Ministry
Mission Statement
The Ushers Ministry Mission is to serve as doorkeepers in the house of the Lord united in one love, one body striving to do God’s work, who are our Light and Joy of our Salvation (Psalm 27:1). Asking God to lead, guide and order our steps will allow us to keep smiling, even though sometimes in unpleasant conditions, for an Usher enters into the presence of the Lord with thanksgiving and into his courts praise. (Psalm 100:4)
HFMDA Ushers Ministry
History from 1951 -2020
The Home and Foreign Mission District Association Ushers Department was organized on March 3, 1951 at the New Hope Baptist Church in Oakland, California, under the leadership of Reverend H. W. Watson and Reverend F. B. Banks as Counselor. Reverend Watson appointed Brother Franklin H. Kay to serve as our first President from 1951 to 1952. Brother Vernon Howard served from 1952 until 1953 when Brother Lou Lucky accepted the challenge to serve as President. Brother Lou Lucky started a long struggle of developing an effective and responsible Ushers Department. Through faith, persistence, determination and lots of hard work, Lou Lucky, Vendetta Wills and the Vice-President of the California State Baptist Ushers, Brother Willie B. Smith, and the Ushers began to flourish in 1962. We became a strong functional component to the District Association. Brother Lou Lucky served until 1970.
On October 4, 1970, Naomi Ellis was elected President and served until June 6, 1972. Brother Albert Burton succeeded her and served from 1976 to 1992. Sister Doris Lewis was elected and served from 1992 to 1998. Sister Lillie B. Brantley served from 1998 to 2003. Sister Joyce Knighten served from 2003 until 2008 Brother noble Cobbins served from 2009 until 2018. Our Current President is Sister Rosie Smith.
On October 15, 1962 the Youth and Union Ushers were organized at Mount Zion Baptist in San Francisco, California. Elvenetta Williams was the Youth Supervisor. Brother Lou Lucky, N. Johnson, Ethel Key, Lula B. Johnson, and R. Loton were all instrumental in helping to organize the Youth.
In 1962, it was officially adopted that a regular monthly meeting be held on the first Sunday of each month at various Churches within the District. Our beginning was slow with only a few Ushers, but over the years with faith in God, the numbers have grown considerably. The District Ushers are actively involved in their respective Churches, State and National Conventions. We are proud of our Ushers because many have and are currently serving as officers in the State and National Convention.
Our accomplishments are many and we praise God for his promise to never leave nor forsake us. Yes, the task has been difficult, but with the help of God, we have made it through.
